Physical Education

“Watching a child makes it obvious that the development of his mind comes about through his movements . . . Mind and movement are parts of the same entity.”
-Maria Montessori

Montessori Academy emphasizes physical education for every child to develop age-appropriate motor skills and to learn the life-skills of cooperation, team work and good sportsmanship. Our youngest students participate in activities designed to develop coordination, balance, spatial awareness and locomotive skills. As students’ gross and fine motor skills mature, children are introduced to team sports, recreational and fitness activities in an inclusive and fun environment.

The ultimate goal is to educate children on the importance of physical activity and motivate every student to become active young citizens who participate and enjoy physical activity on a daily basis.

Nutrition

Healthy eating and good nutrition are hallmarks of of the Montessori philosophy. Students participate in lessons regarding nutrition and food preparation. Daily snacks consist of fruits and vegetables. Students have opportunities to be part of the food preparation activities by learning to wash, slice, and serve. They play an integral role in the set-up and clean-up rituals, gaining ownership over their snacks and meals.

Students participate in cooking activities and gardening. Understanding our food chain and learning to respect the amount of time, effort, and energy invested in growing fruits and vegetables provides students with a deeper appreciation of food and the nutritional benefits. By becoming involved in hands on activities that include the study of food, children learn about the benefits of nutrients found in food and the fundamental relationship to healthy food choices.
