Why are the classrooms so quiet and the children so serious?
At MANT the school day is divided into work periods, recess, and large group activities. Work periods last for about two and a half to three hours in the morning for all children, with an additional two and a half to three hours in the afternoon for the older students. During these times you are likely to see children intent upon learning their alphabet using the sandpaper letters and movable alphabet or exploring other cultures and countries using the Montessori map puzzles. A student may basic math concepts using beads and bead bars while another student is painting or making a collage. This is a busy time for the students and they are very focused on the activity because they have chosen their work and have personal ownership of the concept they are studying.

"The environment itself will teach the child, if every error he makes is manifest to him, without the intervention of a parent or teacher, who should remain a quiet observer of all that happens."
-Maria Montessori
